Urban legends about ghost ships

Speaking of urban legends in Taiwan, the first thing which comes  to mind is the “ghost ship.” It’s said that, after the Weierkang Fire in Taichung in 1995, a ghost ship began to appear in what was then the Taichung First Plaza, now called the ASEAN Plaza. The appearance of the ghost ship foretold unfortunate things.

One story went that the ship would only disappear after it was filled with one hundred people. Although many people died in the Weierkang Fire, that was still less than one hundred people, so the ship still wanders the earth….

But how does the ghost ship sail? According to the story, it sails in the direction of the Chinatown Building in Tainan.  There also those who say it sails north, saying that they’ve seen it on bridges in Sanchong. These all indicate that the ghost ship has been seen before…this is what I’m most skeptical of.

If people have really seen a ghost ship before with their own eyes, it’s strange that after I tried searching online, I haven’t been able to see anyone describing what the ghost ship looks like with their own eyes.

Ships can differ in appearance quite a lot. Like the ghost ships from “Pirates of the Carribean.” You might think of those when you think of “ghost ships,” but it’s hard to imagine them appearing in the First Plaza in Taichung or by the Chinatown Building in Tainan.

What about if it were a more contemporary ships, like a steamboat or a ocean liner? That’d also be very strange. Of course, it couldn’t be a spaceship either. Or an ancient ship, like a Chinese junk? For that to appear in a public location would also be very strange. So if someone has seen this ship before, at least someone should be able to describe what kind of boat it is?

I still haven’t been able to answer these questions. If people hear anything about what kind of boat this is, please let me know. Thank you.
